"LUTHER HUGHES AND THE CANNONBALL-COLTRANE PROJECT, Things
Are Getting Better (Primrose Lane): (3.5 stars out of 5)"
by Bliss
Pasadena Weekly - Feb. 3, 2011
An aural treat for jazzbos jonesing for old-school solo
swaps and melodic material. Alto saxophonist Bruce Babad’s elegant
arrangement of an original melody over the chord changes for the standard “Stars
Fell on Alabama” emblemizes this ensemble’s approach, which respects
jazz history without being enslaved by it. Other highlights include “Glo
in the Dark,” a lightly swinging tribute to Hermosa Beach Lighthouse
booker Gloria Cadena, and “For Trane & Wayne,” lit by Glenn Cashman’s
slow-burning tenor sax. CannonballColtraneProject.com |
